Protect Vedauwoo from ORV Damage

September 19,2005

Dear Supporters of Wild Places,

Biodiversity Conservation Alliance is leading an effort to close three small jeep trails that are the site of major vandalism and illegal off-road vehicle activity on the eastern edge of the Vedauwoo area, between Laramie and Cheyenne. These jeep trails are damaging wetlands, leading to erosion and sedimentation of Middle Crow Creek, and providing access to a nest of illegally created vehicle routes.

In response to previous petitions from BCA, the Forest Service spend thousands of taxpayer dollars to close a number of the illegal spur trails. But motorized users have found ways around the closures, and have worn in new trails right next to the old ones, which were blocked and rehabilitated. In one case, ORV users chain sawed their way through an aspen grove to get around a closure.

SEND A LETTER TO THE EDITOR TO YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER TODAY!

In a good editorial in today's paper, the Casper Star-Tribune has issued a call for letters on the subject of ORV damage in Vedauwoo. It's time to raise your voice and tell the state that ORV vandalism should not be tolerated, and when the vandalism gets extreme, vehicle routes should be closed to motorized travel.

Send your letter, no more than 350 words, to letters@casperstartribune.net. Letters can also be sent to the Laramie Boomerang and Wyoming Tribune-Eagle.

This is a great opportunity to get the word out and show strong support for reining in irresponsible ORV use and BCA's trail closure petition. Thanks for doing your part to protect the spectacular beauty and fragile wetland ecosystems of Vedauwoo. The Forest Service will be paying attention!
