Laramie—Biodiversity Conservation Alliance, a Wyoming-based conservation group, has
just released its schedule of summer hikes and outings in the Medicine Bow, Black Hills,
and Red Desert.
These hikes will be led by BCA staff and members and are free and open to the public.

June 14, Vedauwoo Roadless Area of the Medicine Bow
A short ˝ day hike through a maze of piled granite, wetland meadows, aspen woodlands and
old-growth ponderosa pine.
Difficulty level: easy

June 14 and 15, Adobe Town Hike and Camp Out
Car camping and easy to moderate rambles along the badland rims and among the
pinnacles of the spectacular Adobe Town Wilderness Study Area in the southern
Red Desert.

June 28, Pennock Mountain Roadless Area of the Medicine Bow
An off-trail ramble through meadows and old-growth forest in a rarely visited wildland
of the Medicine Bow.
Difficulty level: moderately strenuous

July 12 and 13, Platte River Wildlands of the Medicine Bow
A loop along the unprotected Douglas and Illinois Creeks near the Platte River
Wilderness, with an optional camp out and second day hike in the adjacent wilderness
quality BLM lands at Prospect Mountain.
Difficulty level: moderate
Hike Leader: John Winkle, BCA member who has worked to protect the Platte River Wildlands
since the 1970’s.
August 16, Black Hills Montane Grasslands Hike
A day hike to the globally unique plant communities and wildflowers of the Black Hills.

A full-day loop along the clear-flowing Rock Creek and the breathtaking ridge
along Rock Creek Canyon.

A day hike along the Middle Fork of Big Creek through the Bear Mountain Roadless Area in the Sierra Madre portion of the Medicine Bow National Forest.

September 6, Preble’s Meadow Jumping MouseCritical Habitat
A day hike to lands in the Vedauwoo area recently designated as critical habitat for
the Preble’s meadow jumping mouse, a federally threatened species. This critical habitat was designated to ensure the recovery of the imperiled mouse.
