Pygmy Rabbit Protection Hits Roadblock
Efforts by conservation groups to gain Endangered Species protection for the pygmy rabbit hit a roadblock this past month, as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declined to study this rare inhabitant of old-growth sagebrush for potential protection. The pygmy rabbit is especially vulnerable to the fragmentation of its sagebrush habitat by roads associated with oil and gas drilling, as well as misguided sagebrush "treatment" projects aimed at increasing grasses for the benefit of livestock. The ruling was expected, as the current administration has always fought the addition of rare plants and wildlife to the Endangered Species list. BCA plans to continue the fight to protect the pygmy rabbit through legal channels.

BCA Welcomes New Organizer
We are pleased to announce that Maggie Schafer will join BCA as our new full-time Community Organizer. Maggie has a Masters of Arts in Field Research and Ecology (with work on the swift fox, one of Wyoming's sensitive species) and has been working on a PhD in Biological Education and Communication. In the past, Maggie worked for the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (their version of Wyoming Natural Diversity Database), and her volunteer efforts included organizing successful events in Colorado for the Cougar Fund and working with Biodiversity Legal Foundation to secure Endangered Speciews protection for the northern goshawk, which requires large tracts of virgin forest to survive.
